Low-Cost Wind Turbine engineered by “Avant Garde Innovations”, an Indian start-up, generates 3-5 kW (Kilowatt) hours of energy daily.

Not long after assuming office of Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan in Kerela (Southern State of India), kicked up a dust-storm by publicly supporting ‘the Athirappilly Hydro-Electric Project’. Which environmentalists stated, if implemented, could create ecologic imbalance in the area and destroy the Athirappilly Waterfalls, the largest natural waterfalls in the state.
It is not that the government is ignorant to the environmental flak that the project could make, but they say, they have no option but to leverage existing means, to put in check the ever expanding energy exigency in Kerela, of which depends partially on the ‘Private Sector’ for Electricity. In other States as well, the circumstances are no different. Kerela may have actualized almost 100% electrical coverage, though many parts of India remain in the ‘Dark Ages’. Yes, even Electricity is still a far off dream to a vast portion of the Indian population, even to this day.
That is where, two siblings who want to make India’s ‘Power Dilemma’ a thing of Yesterday, come in. This genius duo have developed a “New Solution”, they say will not even slightly impact the ecological balance. Avant Garde Innovations is the brain-child startup founded by siblings, Arun and Anoop George. Can anyone guess where from?? That is right… Kerela, India.
Arun and Anoop, have revolutionized the renewable energy game, with a super low-cost (respectively) wind turbine that can father enough Electricity to power an entire house for a lifetime! Not bigger than the size of a standard ceiling fan, this turbine can produce 5 kWh/kW per day — with only an One-Time purchase for $750 USD, basically the cost of a brand-new iPhone.
“Our goal is to eliminate energy poverty, reduce dependence on struggling state power grids and create energy self sufficiency for all needy ones through distributed, localized, affordable and renewable energy. In doing so, we believe we can collectively usher into our World a cleaner environment, new economic prosperity and social change,” reads the companies ‘What We Do’ statement. “Our first offering is a highly affordable small wind turbine suitable for residential, commercial, agricultural, village electrification and other uses, which is aimed for a market launch during 2016.”
Incorporated back in 2015, just a mere two (2) years ago, the timing of their opportunity is perfect for ‘Avant Garde’, who claims to be a startup with a ‘green’ heart and soul. Being incorporated in India, who has the World’s Sixth (6th) largest Energy consumer, answering for 3.4% of Global Energy Consumption. Federal governments of India, and even the Central Government, as a matter of fact, are unable to handle the burden of the huge infrastructural cost required to bring electricity to remote villages.
Erecting posts to carry Power lines to all those remote areas and villages require huge investments that could number in the tens of millions of dollars. That is where, ‘Avant Garde’s steps in to save the day. “When small wind turbine generating 1 kW energy costs INR 3-7 lakh (US$4,000-10,000), our company plans to sell it at less than NR 50,000 (about US$750). “Costs will decrease further through mass production,” Arun said in an interview to The Times of India.
The company had it’s pilot project launch in the Capital City of Thiruvananthapuram, at a church, January of this year (2017). “The small wind turbine prototype that has been developed has high scalability for power capacities of 300 kW or even higher,” Arun told e27.co.
“Our passionate aim is to introduce innovative, affordable and sustainable solutions that take renewable energy self sufficiency and energy empowerment to the next level through a distributed and decentralized approach using pioneering strategies the world has not witnessed yet,” the company goes on to say.
These passions, beliefs in their cause and drive to make the world a better and cleaner environment in which to live, along with developing this revolutionary product, are only some of the reasons in causation for them winning a spot in the Top 20 Cleantech Innovations in India. The company has also made it to the list of 10 Clean Energy Companies from India, for the “UN Sustainable Energy For All” initiative under the One Billion dollar clean energy investment opportunity directory. According to the Global Wind Energy Council, the country ranks Fourth (4th) in terms of Globally installed wind power capacity, after China, the U.S., and Germany.
With momentum from this torrent of innovation and the timing of this rush towards alternative energies in Society, if Avant Garde Innovations takes off, Kerela may keep the Athirappilly Waterfalls untouched and unharmed. If Kerela keeps their natural waterfalls safe, maybe we can keep our natural Earth safe. With out-of-the-box ways of looking at already developed technologies or even attempting new and original designs, maybe we can give cheap renewable energy to the world, and free us from those dreaded power bills.[mashshare]
